What Happens to your brain when you practice mindfulness?


When you practice mindfulness, your brain goes through some interesting changes.



Calming the Alarm System: The amygdala, which is like your brain's alarm system for stress and fear, becomes less active. This helps you feel calmer and less anxious.


Strengthening Focus: The prefrontal cortex, which is in charge of planning, decision-making, and focus, gets stronger. This makes it easier to concentrate and stay on task.


Improving Emotional Regulation: Mindfulness increases connections between different parts of your brain, helping you manage your emotions better. You become less reactive and more able to handle stress.


Enhancing Memory: The hippocampus, which is important for memory and learning, grows in size. This means your memory can improve over time with regular mindfulness practice.


Increasing Gray Matter: Overall, mindfulness can lead to an increase in gray matter in your brain. Gray matter contains most of your brain's neurons and is involved in muscle control, sensory perception, decision making, and self-control.


In short, mindfulness helps your brain stay calm, focused, and better at handling emotions, which can make you feel more balanced and in control.
